We Talked of Getting an Inflatable Driver

"The Drive Home"
by W.S. Merwin

I was always afraid
of the time when I would arrive home
and be met by a special car
but this wasn't like that
they were so nice the young couple
and I was relieved not to be driving
so I could see the autumn leaves on the farms

I sat in the front to see better
they sat in the back
having a good time
and they laughed with their collars up
they said we could take turns driving
but when I looked
none of us was driving

then we all laughed
we wondered if anyone would notice
we talked of getting an inflatable
driver
to drive us for nothing through the autumn leaves

Mission complete.

I wouldn't be opposed to congratulations.

I Would Have Her Be Beautiful

"Selecting a Reader"
by Ted Kooser

First, I would have her be beautiful,
and walking carefully upon my poetry
at the loneliest moment of an afternoon,
her hair still damp at the neck from washing it. She should be wearing
a raincoat, an old one, dirty
from not having money enough for the cleaners.
She will take out her glasses, and there
in the bookstore, she will thumb
over my poems, then put the book back up on
its shelf. She will say to herself,
"For that kind of money, I can get
my raincoat cleaned." And she will.

I cannot say I'm as practical as this ideal reader; I cannot say no to a book once it calls to me.

This past week I spent hours researching a poem by W.S. Merwin because, for the life of me, I could not recall the title. Certain phrases came to mind, but the title still eluded me. And so I searched. Google did not prove wholly useless. Eventually I discovered the title of the piece. Then I learned which collection it was from. And from there I was able to peruse Amazon.com for the book. After all that searching, I purchased an entire collection for only one poem, a poem I so desperately want to remember.

Once the book arrives, I will share that poem with you and the rest of the internet so that the next person who googles this poem will find it in less than 78398452110 hours of searching.

This is my mission.

Cigarettes, Birth Control and Musty Suitcases

After a delicious lunch at Noodles & Company, my dear friend Angel and I decided to go antiquing at the local mall. The expedition produced some worthwhile finds, others comical, and others not so wonderful. It was a good day...

Fais les valises!

Chubby Owl! He ate all the cookies.

These glasses are bi-ficals...Aren't they fantastic?

Have a coke and a smile, darlin.

Nasty old sofa...I'm such a great friend...I made her sit on it...mwahahahah

This is Morris and Helen...They are immigrant, homeless camels from Egypt.

Earrings in the shape of cigarettes...I love the coincidence of the "No Smoking" sign.

1950s Handbag...Now a part of my wardrobe!

Antique apron...I shall be baking cupcakes in the near future!
Birth Control Pill Instructions: Place pill on the inside of left knee, then bring right knee to press firmly on the pill's opposite side. This method of birth control is proven 100% effective.

Decorating with antique film reels is sort of trendy, but I still like the idea.

I want everything in this photo...especially the hatboxes!
Those poor children in the photo look miserable, and all she could do was mock them....hahah!

I purchased that lace skirt! I couldn't resist!

More owls! So cute!

I love my best frann! She's the Lucy to my Ethel.

Exciting Events

Well, firstly, I got a NEW CAMERA!!! Hooray! It's a Samsung with a a viewing screen on both the front and back...fancy, I know. Though my webcam was doing a fair job, I'm glad that I will no longer have blurry, grainy web cam photos that need meticulous editing.  Ta-da:
Dress//ModCloth   Scarf//Zumies   Broach//Antique   Shoes//Vintage   Ring//Vintage

Ok, so it's not quite professional quality, but it's still better than what I had! I can now use a tripod and take photos with a timer longer than three seconds, which will in the end save me twisted ankles and frustration. I'm very pleased ^_^

Also, I am blogger of the week at White After Labor Day. Head on over to check out my feature and be sure to explore the blog a little...She has some exciting giveaways going on right now.

And I would like to announce the grand opening of The Quirky Poet vintage clothing store on Etsy.com. Since thrifting and vintage clothes hunting is not a luxury everyone has, I thought I'd share my finds. I hope you'll all take a peek at the pretty things I have listed.

Bonne Journée!

Treasure Hunt: Frilly Lace and Barbie Shoes

Yesterday was a rather productive day of scavenging. It’s amazing what $15 can buy you at a second-hand shop. If you’re patient enough, you really can find some lovely, well-preserved pieces. I gathered a rather heavy armful of goodies; here are some of my favorite finds:

Part of me wonders if this blouse was intended to be a nightie, but another part of me doesn’t really care what it was intended for. I will make of it what I will! I adore the feminine touch of lace across the chest and the embroidery at the collar. There are so many possibilities with this: with skinny jeans, under dresses, with high-waisted skirts. Such a frilly, amicable piece for only $2.

I call shoes like this “Barbie Shoes” since all my Barbies wore shoes like this in a myriad of colors. The soles are in pretty good shape as well as the insole, considering these appear to be from the 1980s. And they were only $1.50! Woot!

This top is hardly vintage. It’s from Old Navy, but I liked the collar and the boyishness of it. It’s gonna fit in great with my high-waisted jeans and shorts. I’d say it was $1.50 well invested.

This blazer (worn with my Safari for Two Tee from ModCloth) felt like a triumph. Not sure what era it is from, but by the label I’m estimating 1980s or 1990s. The stance is exactly what I was looking for, the off-white is classic, and the sleeves are 3/4 length. Perfect for a summer look. And all for only $4. I was pretty excited.

This over-the-shoulder handbag had no label, but goodness, doesn’t it just scream 1990s? I remember my aunt wearing patterns and colors like this when I was little. Perhaps that’s why I was instantly fond of it. Another $1.50 well spent.
Days like this, I feel rather satisfied, as though I accomplished something. (I’m just a wanna-be treasure hunter.) I’m really looking forward to incorporating these pieces into my wardrobe. No doubt you’ll see them popping up soon...I tend to wear all my new clothes quite immediately. It’s just no fun to make myself wait!
