Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater

The EBEW assignment: to wear black and white. And I tried. I really did. But I have no black shoes! (Aside from this hideous pair of black combat boots that I only wear for utilitarian purposes.) Such an atrocity, I know. But here is my black and white outfit...with a sneaky pair of brown flats. (Please don't give me an F!)

How does an avid shopper like me end up with no black or white shoes? Well, I think I just get too distracted by the oddball shoes. I wear peach shoes with tassels on them. I'm the quirky poet, after all. I'm drawn to strange things by nature. Most times it takes effort for me to incorporate basics in my wardrobe, let alone an outfit compiled entirely of basics. It's a miracle that I have a LBD and black tights in my possession!

Mixing patterns and textures is easy for me. (Check out this pattern frenzy.) Wearing solid colors alone? Not so much. Part of me thinks I ought to work on this...another part (a larger part really) thinks that I should just be me and not worry about it.

Besides, if all these photos were in black and white, you wouldn't have been able to tell that I cheated.

Just Peachy

This outfit has so many delightful pieces to it. Normally I don't wear sequins just because they make me feel flashy and like a flapper, and that sort of style doesn't really fit me. BUT this scarf is the exception. I think that, because it's in a small amount and it's on such a lovely crocheted scarf, it suits me.

Then there's the bow. I am wearing these bows on everything lately. They're so convenient! They add just the right whimsical touch. Don't you agree? Beauty and pleasure are in the details.

And I would be remiss if I did not gush about how amazing this purse is. It's made entirely of plastic, which I know isn't exactly eco-friendly, BUT it was the 1930s when it was made. Everybody wore real fur made from chinchilla and fox then, too. But that's beside the point. IT'S GORGEOUS! It belonged to my great-grandmother, who I never knew. I like carrying this purse and wondering about what she was like. My mother tells me she was very sweet. I like feeling that connection to the past.

And, since I am a person who believes in giving credit where credit is due, I'd just like to take a moment to thank my dear little Pea for helping me get dressed...

...and also for being so freaking cute ^_^

EWOK!!

I can't say I'm thrilled with this entire look, but I feel cozy and I do LOVE this hat...so much :)

When trying on this hat, I was essentially frolicking through the store. I was with my mom at the time, and she was just giggling at me (as she often does because I'm a bit of a shenaniganizer). She told me I had to get the hat because it makes me look like a little ewok. And I love ewoks*.

Meep!

Look inspired by Freckles in April.

*No ewoks were harmed in the making of this hat...or in the making of this post, for that matter.

"There Was Something of the Dandy About Him"

Recently I read a short story titled “Paul’s Case,” and I just adore the way Willa Cather uses fashion to symbolize the character’s overall contempt for the societal norms of his time. Paul wears a red carnation in his button hole and dresses totally opposite of his collegiate peers. I like Paul. He’s sassy and dramatic. And this makes me wonder...If I were a character and my clothing served a symbolic purpose, what would it say about me?

*cheesy smile*

Lately my fashion choices have been questionable. My colors never match anymore. But who says you can’t wear maroon and orange together? (Probably anyone who has ever learned the color wheel.)

Perhaps it means I’ve become a bit like Paul: contemptuous of normalcy --- and doing laundry so I have clean clothes that match.

Layers and Rings

I'm just so pleased with autumn's gradual arrival. I've missed layering my clothing...

This week IFB asked us to have some "nail fun" and post our current nail polish. But my nails are naked...always naked. I haven't painted them since I painted them black for senior prom. Despite what a girly-girl I am, nail polish just is not one of my indulgences...I prefer dressing up my hands and feet with rings like I'm a gypsy.

Dans Mon Sac à Main

Asking a girl what she keeps inside her handbag is a rather intimate question. Nevertheless I shall answer it since the IFB Project asked so nicely ;)

Tearing apart my bag, I felt rather pleased with how low-maitenance it is. What's inside:

Red Wallet --because you can't go shopping very well without money, you know
Leather Journal --because inspiration seems to hit at the strangest times, and writing on the backs of shopping receipts is not very organized
Pen and Pencil --because sometimes I'm in the mood for ink and others I'm in the mood for changing my mind
Floral Zipper Pouch --because some things a lady likes to keep secret
Burt's Bees Lip Balm --because lipgloss and lipstick make me feel sticky and fishy and unnatural
Hair Tie --because some days my curls get the better of me
iPod and Headphones --because even vintage girls like a little modern technology

What do you keep in your handbag?
