Playing Dress Up

After an eternity (no exaggeration there) of devoting myself solely to workworkworkworkwork, I indulged in a brief round of dress up yesterday. I also spent time watching old episodes of House, made some muffins, and then decided I would do some painting with watercolor. Yep, I play dress up, write poetry and I paint too.

Some people say that makes me a hippy. My brother says I have a chubby seven year old spirit trapped inside me. Which I suppose isn't too far off. I live off of sugar, and I mean, seriously, I'm wearing a t-shirt with a giraffe and a lion riding a tandem bike.

But there's nothing wrong with that :)
What sort of things do you like to do in your free time?

It's my birthday. I can wear what I want to.

Since being 20 years old means I sort of have to be a grown up, I have to spend my birthday at my internship and in college classes. So this outfit is a bit polished and includes a blazer...because I try to look serious when I’m at my internship.

Although I’m twenty years old now and am told I’m rather sophisticated for a girl my age, I still am a whimsical, young spirit. Proof:
  1. I still sleep with a teddy bear
  2. my favorite book is a children’s book (Alice in Wonderland)
  3. I wear t-shirts with animals on them, and this dress has foxes on it
  4. I own a substantial owl collection (which is a step up from the Barbie collection of my tenth year) and each of them have names
  5. my favorite food is cupcakes
  6. and doing headstands is probably my favorite activity right now

Later today I have to do "show and tell" for my French class, and I'm taking along this purse. This is probably the first time I've ever been thrilled about the prospect of talking in front of people. I'm hoping my professor will be impressed when I say Mon sac à main a quatre-vingt ans. An "A" would be a nice birthday present.

Thank you everybody for the sweet wishes yesterday. Someday I will invent a device that will allow me to share cupcakes with you through my computer monitor.

Green and Red

As a personal rule, I avoid green and red combinations during the holidays so as not to appear grotesquely cheesy. I thought I had succeeded this year, but after looking at these photos of my anti-Christmas outfits, I realized that I had subconsciously worked in variations of the classic Christmas colors. Alas, I am not a Scrooge afterall.

This first outfit felt like such a success to me. I paired not two, not three, but four different patterns without looking like a Christmas clown. I think that right there makes for some fashion history.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

My head is spinning with thoughts of finals week and all the miserable essays I have to compose in the next few days, so I'm afraid I have nothing of substance to say other than: Like, OHMYGOD, don't you just love this sweater?!

So I realize these photos are somewhat subpar, but IT'S COLD OUTSIDE! I had no desire to put makeup on my face, so you can see how rosy my nose is from the coldness. But it's sort of endearing, right? RIGHT?!

Forgive me. I'm ever so slightly stressed out o.O

The Quirky Creeper

Not sure if blogging is what made me into such a creeper, or if the creepy gene has been lurking inside me all along. (I'm supposing the latter.)

Keeping to the same locale of my backyard and bedroom for photos is boring me, so I've decided to branch out to other locations. This is the basement of my community college. It is a ghost town. No classes are held on this floor. Only spiders and creepy people like me hang out here. Proof:

Also, I keep taking photos of bugs. What is up with this nonsense? I'm even creeping on the creepy crawlies!

Blogging in essence is largely based on the assumption that everyone enjoys stalking one another. We're all busy-bodies. I've never personally met any of the bloggers I follow, still I stalk them religiously. Same reason why everyone is obsessed with facebook and proclaiming their personal business to the entire world. We like attention. And we like to creep.

But I suppose it's not so bad after all. Perhaps creeping is the glue that holds our society together. If we had no interest in one another, there'd be no social support and most of us (including myself) ultimately would probably just die. And so, in the interest of all my fellow humanity, I vow to continue creeping.

Pomegranate

This weekend I tried a pomegranate for the very first time. I enjoy exploring the realm of food. Josh tells me I'm a weirdo, but sometimes, even though I detest coffee, I like to taste it just so that I can remember its bitterness. I just like experiencing tastes. As with scents, I feel it engages memory and connects a person to nature.
And so, the pomegranate, my most recent food adventure...

Peeling it was a rather gory process. The fruit sort of bled everywhere, squirting onto the floor, the countertops, my dogs (who were investigating), and me. The luscious red juice inspired this outfit. (Inspiration strikes at strange moments for me.)

As I was carving out the innards of the fruit, I felt like I was opening a honeycomb and plucking out all the bee larvae. Creepy, I know. I was surprised I felt like eating it after such a comparison.

It was such a  lengthy process, but YES it was worth it...very very worth it. The pomegranate seedlings are DELICIOUS. I ate some and put the rest in a container. They'll stay fresh for up to 7 days! Plus, a pomegranate is full of awesome nutrients, including antioxidants, which help fight aging factors. And I'm all for that!

"There Was Something of the Dandy About Him"

Recently I read a short story titled “Paul’s Case,” and I just adore the way Willa Cather uses fashion to symbolize the character’s overall contempt for the societal norms of his time. Paul wears a red carnation in his button hole and dresses totally opposite of his collegiate peers. I like Paul. He’s sassy and dramatic. And this makes me wonder...If I were a character and my clothing served a symbolic purpose, what would it say about me?

*cheesy smile*

Lately my fashion choices have been questionable. My colors never match anymore. But who says you can’t wear maroon and orange together? (Probably anyone who has ever learned the color wheel.)

Perhaps it means I’ve become a bit like Paul: contemptuous of normalcy --- and doing laundry so I have clean clothes that match.

Deep Breathing

I can't lie to you. I'm stressed out. Extremely stressed out. Don't let that calm countenance fool you.
It may be awhile (likely after midterms are over with) before I post again, but I promise it will not be forever! Please excuse me while I take some deep breaths and sort out my life.
I will soon respond to your comments and emails, my dears. I have read them all, and I am always so encouraged by your kind words. In the meantime, be sure to like The Quirky Poet on facebook. I try to keep things up to date there; a status update takes much less time than a blog post.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend :)

Squirrels!!!

I love shirt dresses...they make for such delightfully low-maitenance outfits. Plus the acorn print is odd and wonderful, is it not? Acorns make me think of squirrels. And I like squirrels. They're fuzzy and adorable. Like kittens!!!

When I was a little girl -like two years old probably- there was a sociable squirrel that would come visit my mother and me. We would feed it corn from a tiny wicker basket, and so it became our friend. It's one of the few memories I have retained from my two year old life.

And with that fond memory in my head, I'm off to school, where flocks of geese run rampant. And geese are neither nice nor fluffy. Not like squirrels. I don't like geese.

Woodland Nymph

While on my nature "hike" today, I came across a coyote. Yes, that's right, I crossed paths with a coyote and failed to capture the moment on camera. Fascinated and frightened at once, my mind somehow rationalized that clicking the shutter would send the coyote into a predatory frenzy, so instead, I kept very still. For approximately fifteen seconds the coyote and I stood motionless, staring at one another, studying one another, until he casually walked into the bushes. I felt incredible...like a mountain woman, a free spirit, or perhaps a woodland nymph.
